Landmark Ballot Initiative Launched to Ban Abusive Factory Farming Practices in Arizona

Volunteer Signature Gatherers Needed to Allow Voters the Chance to Ban Gestation Crates and Veal Crates in Our State

September 10 , 2005

The Animal Defense League of Arizona is one of the supporting organizations of a statewide campaign announced today to ban gestation crates and veal crates in Arizona. This will entail a grassroots effort of gathering 200,000 signatures to place the measure on the November 2006 ballot for a vote by the people of Arizona.

Campaign kick-off and volunteer training meetings are scheduled for the first week of October in Flagstaff, Phoenix and Tucson. Spearheaded by Arizonans for Humane Farms, these sessions will prepare volunteers for the signature gathering process and will feature guest speakers Wayne Pacelle of the Humane Society of the United States and Gene Bauston of Farm Sanctuary.

BRIEF CAMPAIGN BACKGROUND:

In an effort to continually increase productivity and profit, factory farms are known to treat feeling, sensitive animals as nothing more than commodities. Both veal calves and breeding pigs are kept so severely confined in crates that the animals cannot even turn around or extend their limbs. The extremely overcrowded conditions cause extreme suffering for the animals, in addition to polluting the air, contaminating groundwater and threatening human health. Both veal and gestation crates are so cruel that they have been outlawed in several other countries. And, in fact, the gestation crate was outlawed through a precedent-setting citizen initiative in Florida in 2002.

For more information on the campaign, for additional facts about gestation crates and veal crates, and to read the exact language of the initiative, please visit www.yesforhumanefarms.org.

HOW YOU CAN HELP:

Concerned Arizonans now have a crucial opportunity to outlaw both veal and gestation crates in our state by placing a measure on the ballot for the 2006 election. Hundreds of volunteer petitioners are needed to collect the 200,000 signatures needed to make this ballot initiative a reality in Arizona!

If you would like to volunteer to collect signatures, please contact Arizonans for Humane Farms and attend one of the kick-off meetings if there is one scheduled in your community:
