ASU Conference Addresses Investigation and Psychosocial Treatment of Animal Cruelty

Goal: To help stop the cycle of violence to all living beings.

Objectives: To train social service and mental health practitioners in assessing for and treating animal cruelty in their human clients and to train police officers in the identification and investigation of animal cruelty.

Friday June 24, 2005
Location: County Board of Supervisors Auditorium (205 W. Jefferson, Phoenix)

9 am: Opening Remarks Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas
9:30 -11:15 am: Animal abuse and the link with other forms of family violence -- Dr. Randy Lockwood, Humane Society of the United States (HSUS)
11:30 am - 12 noon: Cultural Issues of the Southwest
12 noon - 1:15 pm: Lunch on Own
1:15 pm - 2:45 pm: Recognizing animal cruelty

Workshop 1: Treating adults who abuse animals: Anicare model for adults: Ken Shapiro, Society and Animal Forum

Workshop 2:. Treating children who abuse animals: Anicare model for children , Presenter TBA

Workshop 3: 9 am - 12 noon Recognizing and treating animal hoarding: Dr. Randy Lockwood HSUS
1pm - 4 pm Teaching compassion/Humane education: Cheri Brown Thompson, The Healing Species
